Pulling another one of the vaults for everyone today. I dig this, I think everybody else should too.
The Avalanches are a crew from Melbourne, Australia that initially started up as punk band but, as they ended up gobbling down old records like the cookie monster, eventually found some fame as a DJ troupe to close out the last decade, playing with artists such as Beck and the Beastie Boys. 'Since I Left You' was their first and, so far, only album. They've reportedly had one sitting on the shelves for years now that's fighting the never-ending battle for sample clearance.
'Since I Left You' is a journey through a world of a million samples, running from Sergio Mendes to Raekwon to Madonna and everything in between. The whole album provides the listener with some uplifting tunes and has a unifying concept of a certain kind of love story. As member Robbie Chater puts it in this interview, it was "an international search for love from country to country. The idea of a guy following a girl around the world and always being one port behind. And that was just because we had all these records from all over the world, and we'd like to use all that stuff." It was initially met with serious acclaim, and the videos for their 2 singles - Frontier Psychiatrist and Since I Left You - definitely got some love.
So here it is. Download, listen, love...
