Magnifico
(HIP HOP)
We're all familiar with DJ Jazzy Jeff. Anyone who watched Fresh Prince in their youth (otherwise known as the priveleged group of the 90s) saw Jazz getting tossed into, out of, and over all sorts of shit, and playing the role of the mack with Hillary. What most people don't know, however, is that he is one of the most celebrated people in the vast soundscape of hip hop, from underground to overground.
While he started off with Will Smith as Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, their careers were largely polarized. Smith fractured off to become one of the most recognizable faces in Hollywood and the celebrity world, more as an actor than a musician. Jeff, on the other hand, took to the tables and the boards. He's a premier party-rocking DJ, the man who popularized the 'Transformer' scratch, and a dope ass producer, whose 2 premier albums, 'The Magnificent' and 'The Return of the Magnificent' are bonafide masterpieces.
Today, I've gathered a few magnificent things to help you appreciate the lesser-known man in the old tandem from Philly. Download, listen, love....
DJ Jazzy Jeff - The Block Party (1993) - This is a straight rip from an actual cassette tape mixtape he did in the midst of hip hop's golden age. Pure heat.
DJ Jazzy Jeff - My Faves Vol. 1 - This is an absolutely awesome project he did, remixing his favorite raps with just the SICKEST beats. A good insight into how good of a producer he is for everyone.
DJ Jazzy Jeff - He's The King, I'm the DJ - This is a tribute mix he did for the late Michael Jackson, recorded earlier this year.
..........
Hah!
