Legends in the Game

(HIP HOP)

First up: See that picture? Thats a painting by my main man Petey aka DJ Staypuft, one of 3 he did to pay homage to the dopest producers in hip hop history (the other 2 canvases were Pete Rock and Madlib). Kids got some fackin' talent, no?

Now, on to the feature presentation...

Jay Dilla, may his soul forever rest in peace, is one of the best hip hop producers ever. Starting as a teenager (seriously, before he could even drink legally in CANADA) he started making heaters for Pharcyde to rap on in their classic album 'Labcabincalifornia.' Next, he alligned himself with fellow Detroit citizens Slum Village, and from there took the world over. By all accounts a great and humble man, Dilla was a true artist that left hip hop forever changed for the better in his wake. (...listen to one of Meta's beats and tell me JD didn't leave his mark on the music)

Nas is arguably the most lyrically gifted MC to have ever walked the Earth. Always politically charged and profound, this street poet is as legendary as an MC as Dilla is as a producer. The album he broke out with, Illmatic, remains my choice as the best solo effort that has ever been made by any MC ever in hip hop history... ever. From that, he took off with AZ and Foxy Brown in their crew 'The Firm' and, like Dilla, took over the whole wide world.

What I got for you today is a fun lil diddy that Squeak Boogie put together, combining Nas' classic raps with Jay's classic beats. Download, listen, love...
