Ebb & Flow

Music pulls at me. No, seriously. In a literal sense it pushes and prods and moves me, in a physical way. And not dancing, although that is always encouraged. What I mean is that just as what I listen to and how I listen changes, so too do the moods and responses they provoke. Other factors play in, like how long one listens for, or how frequently. These provocations result in action, immediately and in the long-term. Ebb and flow. Push and pull.

Appropriately, I reside in a  city that is pretty much underwater all the time, existing most often as a layer of the world that is just rain and cloud. A cloud city, forming where the ocean and massive mountainous forests meet. A huge part of this city can be found in bass. Another large part can be found in song. This post will hopefully show a bit of both, while reflecting what I have been listening to lately, because really, isn't it all about me? Jokes.

Label Love Compilation Vol.2

( EVERYTHING GOOD )

Fuckin rights. The Label Love compilation is back with volume dos, and holy reindeer batman it comes nice and tight. A wide range of sounds, all based in space camp awesome ohmega, rip through your preconceptions of what you like to show you a new path, a path of many different paths that come together here for you. Step out onto the magical rainbow of colorful audio and get lost to the world. This is good music.

Check it here direct or at the bandcamp page.

Neenah - The Quality Selection Mixtape

( SOUL / R+B / RAP )

Despite being called a mixtape, this is a good album in my opinion. This singer/rapper/producer comes correct and as this album found it's way onto my ipod over the past few weeks these songs always get my full attention. Solid boom bap mentality comes to form and brings the vibe very diversely and very nicely. Neenah steps up in all roles, with a softer touch when necessary, but always tight -  and on occasion backed by heavy hitters like Skyzoo or Supastition you know it's gonna be bangin.

So go ahead and ignore it becuase it's female rapper. Jokes. That would be a dumb move, you sexist you. Show some love dummy.

DJ Zo + Dumbfounded - Cute + Paste EP

( NEW SCHOOL / RAP )

From two no good trouble makers down Californieeee way comes this little treat, which remixes a variety of modern sources with raps. The rapper of this particular duo has a good understanding of true school flows and deliveries as well as the new school shit, and as such the combination is quite nice. Refreshing while still remaining rooted. Dig it. Only six tracks so no hardship to it.

The Planty Herbs - Beattapes

( BEATSFORDAZE )

The Netherlands seems to be an interesting place. Along with many other European nations, it has embraced the dusty funky machiney Dilla and post-Dilla sounds that have echoed the world over. My awesome cousin Brian Van Tighem, who has long been a supporter and wicked ear for good chunes, put me on to the treat that is The Planty Herbs, aka TPH, who hail from the land of legalization. They have an exquisite ear for samples and they craft some pretty much perfect boom bap and new school sample based breaks. Releasing a lot of different vibin beats, please check out at least one tape below. First hit is free. Well, they all are, but you get it.

NINJA TUNE XX

( NINJA MUSIC )

If you haven't heard, recently Ninja Tunes turned twenty. Can you believe it? Twenty years of astounding music for everyday life and assassination. To celebrate, a whole bunch of artists and DJs did what it is that they do and put some music together. While assassinating people. A standout for me was the DJ Kentaro mix, but with people like ESKMO, Grasscut, DJ Food, and Coldcut it can be hard to choose - like a buffet, I find myself continually going back for more and gorging myself at the trough of ninja beats. You should too.

Check out the whole shebang here. Then go assassinate someone.

There is more action around the Ninja Tunes XX. Check out their site to find out more.

That will be all for now. I hope you are not being pushed or pulled too hard in any direction you do not like, but if you must go down a path less desirable, take some good music with you. It will make a difference.
