v. hus·tled, hus·tling, hus·tles
v.intr.
1. To move or act energetically and rapidly: We hustled to get dinner ready on time.
2. To push or force one's way.
3. To act aggressively, especially in business dealings.

Damn, I guess the Supreme Hustle are just about the most aptly named crew ever.

When I turned 18, I had my ID in hand, ready to walk confidently into any show that I wanted to, and an insatiable thirst to hear some drum'n'bass on a big system. I sent a message to the one person I could think of at the time who could point me in the right direction, an old friend of Meta's known to the scene as Big Worm, and he pretty much told me shit was quieter than a monastery in this city. One night a week, they'd play some jungle in the basement of the Amsterdam Rhino... and it was a 21+ night if you didn't have them tigolbitties.

My thoughts on that?

Then something happened, 2 people took ahold of the scene in this city and hustled their asses off to bring in heavy hitter after heavy hitter. The first one I can remember was seeing Evol Intent at What About Bobs around the turn of the new year in 2008. Then there was a slew of others from DnB and dubstep that came through town... Ed Rush floored me at Bobs, Rusko rocked me out at the Crescent Heights community center, N-Type played the Juiliard and it was one of the craziest sets I've ever seen, Hive brought out the Irish in me at Lucky Breaks (I got crunk) and Technical Itch was the perfect flavour for a little Halloween spirit. Shit was wild, for those first few shows I considered myself the hype commander, so fortunate to have these guys coming through and not knowing when they would stop that I went as crazy as I could. Front and Center.

Then people caught on. After enough time nattering in my friends ears about these shows more and more people started showing. Excision rocking the Soda, Caspa killin Bobs, Rusko coming through again and playing a set with a bass guitar, Benny Page rocking the smallest dancefloor ever with his gorgeous reggae vibes. When I reminisce on the constantly growing scene in this city, I think of these 2.

Mark Instinct and Slim Pickins are the Supreme Hustle. If you have enjoyed any of the shows in Calgary, you owe these guys some damn love. Note their faces and shake their hand or give em a big ol' hug the next time you see them at a show. They have made the scene in Calgary what it is today. There's definitely others (Shouts to Dan Solo, Mr. Geography, Soundbwoy Murda, Lorne B and I'm sure many more names I don't even know) but as far as I'm aware it's not anywhere close to the work these two have done.

You'll note that from Halloween to this Friday these names will have come through Calgary - Kraddy, Caspa, AK1200, Dieselboy, Excision, Datsik, Subvert, Rusko, Bassnectar and Spor. If that isn't the mark of a city with a damn healthy scene I don't know what is. Thinking back to my 18th birthday dilemma 2 years (and change) ago, that is nothing short of amazing.

Meta linked up Mark Instinct's Hush House exclusive a couple weeks back, and I listened to it non-stop for about a week. Today, I got you their 'Dubstep Killaz' mix series and, just for good measure, their 'Jungle Buggin' mix.

Give em props on their facebook pages once your done with the mixes (Mark Instinct, Slim Pickins), but until then - Download, listen, love...
