(DUBSTEP)
Mala and Coki are the Digital Mystikz and, along with Loefah and Pokes - their mates in DMZ, are responsible for starting an event that allowed dubstep to become what it has.
DMZ (Desperately Missing Zion) started in 2005 as a night where Coki, Mala, Loefah, and MC Sgt. Pokes could come in and play what they wanted to on a Soundsystem they constructed in Brixton. As it took form and inevitably gravitated people toward it, it became a huge night with a huge following whenever they threw it. From that it became a record label, and anything released on said label is an instant classic and is damn near impossible to find on vinyl. Without these guys doing what they did, dubstep and the soundsystem culture that goes along with it would be alot different (read: shittier). They now have an annual DMZ birthday set every March that makes me jealous of all those bastards who live in the UK.
So... I guess I'm just saying, even if you don't like their shit (as alot of steppers who only got into it recently might not) appreciate their impact and respect the hell outa them.
This interview with Mala and Loefah is absolutely fantastic. Make sure you got some time set aside to read it, but it gives alot of insight into the early years of dubstep, the soundsystem culture, the production process, the unprecedented growth, and the perspective of 2 of its major players.
