Wow what the hell, almost one whole year of sharing with you all through this blog. Time flies. In celebration of our one year anniversary together, I'm gonna drop a diverse bunch of goodies. Please pick through, there's something for everyone, no need to push. More will be put up in the next couple days too. Enjoy!
Mac Miller - KIDS Mixtape
( HIP HOP / RAP )
Shit is nice. Nothing too crazy out there or cutting edge, just some nice hip hop, dipping into soul, jazz, and newer style synth + clap beats and raps. This kid is only eighteen, barely legal, but still killing it with a good vibe and some party time, smoke time, chillin in the street time music. Worth the quick download, maybe find a couple joints to help accompany the fleeting summer days.
DJ A-Trak - Dirty South Dance Vol. 2
( CRUNK / RAP / HOUSE / BASS / BOOTY )
Everybody remember A-Trak? The kid who killed everyone on the tables when he was literally just a kid? He has carved out a name for himself in a variety of circles, none more completely or successfully than in the party mashup remix kill everyone in the room with dancing music circle. Within that circle he is a God. And it shows, especially on mixes like this one, the follow up to 2007's Dirty South Dance Volume 1. It has been out for a couple of months now, but it has been played more the higher the old thermostat climbs, seemingly confirming the link between hot sunny days and the urge to party like a dirty south rockstar. Be warned - if you resent four four bass shit, maybe this isn't for you. But be open minded. If you follow the link in the title above, you can preview some of the tracks on his bandcamp page. It's a free download either way, so there's not much to lose. Now get dirty.
The Dirty Sample - Unluck
( HIP HOP / BEATS / INSTRUMENTAL )
From one of the most prolific and multi-faceted monkeys in the land, my close friend and partner in music Planit aka Apeface aka Dirty Sample, comes this release that was recorded back when he and I shared a studio in Calgary. The time we had in that studio was truly amazing, and we recorded many albums worth of material there. Some of it has been released, more is coming out now and into the next few months, but for right now he presents to the world an ode to his ex-girlfriends appropriately titled 'Unluck.' Featuring a nice selection of his trademark dirty soul beats, the sad ape tells a tale of love lost, broken, and pushed away. If you dig it, look for one of his other million and a half releases on neferiu, workturkey, handsolo, or any one of the other labels he has worked with. Or, wait for 'Toothface Swaggerfoot,' a collaborative instrumental album we did together that I am now just finishing mixing down. He also recently released 'Joshua's Dreamixes,' another product of our fabled studio time together, where he remixes a massive roster of rappers from all over the world.
Oh and Planit's recent rap album 'Two Blue Apes' is now up for free download. Get it here.
Mosca - XLR8R Podcast
( DANCEHALL / BASS / RAP / REGGAETON / BEATS )
Another XLR8R podcast that I have been bumping pretty much every day that the sun shines. This one mixes a wide variety of really dope tracks, moving through proper dancehall to rudie rap to random bass music and beyond. I love DJs who can not only move through various genres and tempos but make it sound good, engaging the listener but also sparking curiosity about the artists played, moving their booties and their minds. This mix is proper. Nuff said.
