Golden Era - Part One (Boom-Bap)

(HIP HOP)

When I was coming of age in my musical youth, I was jealous of the older folks (such as a certain brother or two) who would have been into music when hip hop was taking shape as the beautiful art form that it has become. From the years between (roughly) 1991 to 1994, hip hop enjoyed it's so-called 'Golden Era.' This saw the rise of east coast superstars from the Notorious BIG (Ready to Die) to Nas (Illmatic) to KRS One (Return of the Boom Bap) to Pete Rock and CL (Mecca and the Soul Brother) to Jeru the Damaja (The Sun Rises in the East) to Mobb Deep (The Infamous), while out on the West Coast the Souls of Mischief were just beginning to chill 'til infinity, NWA was expressing themselves and somewhere in between Common Sense was getting resurrected.

Times have changed... Biggies dead, Nas found a long lost brother in Bob Marleys kid, KRS One is more of a politician than a rapper, Pete and CL have long since parted ways, Jeru's retired, Mobb Deeps more infamous recently for 50 Cent collabos, Souls (God bless em) are still chillin, and the 'bitch' in Ice Cube got exposed in 'Are We There Yet?', but Common lost his sense and started making tracks with the Jonas brothers, so while he brags about his SAG card he can't really step back with the feud any more.

This mix isn't about how things change, this is about the beautiful way they came to be what they are. Even back then, the men who made hip hop knew that we would reminisce over them.
